"Six Years After Michael Brown's Death, America Still Grapples with Systemic Racism and Police Brutality"

In August 2014, the shooting of Michael Brown by police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri sparked protests and debates about systemic racism and police brutality in America. Six years later, we are still grappling with these issues.

Brown’s death served as a catalyst for the Black Lives Matter movement and brought attention to the unequal treatment of Black people by law enforcement. The Department of Justice conducted an investigation into the shooting and found that there was no evidence to support criminal charges against Officer Wilson, but it did reveal significant racial bias within Ferguson’s police department.

Despite this progress, however, police violence against Black people has continued. In June 2020 alone, Rayshard Brooks, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor were all killed by police officers. These tragedies highlight the need for ongoing reforms in policing practices.

As journalists and writers, it is our responsibility to continue reporting on these issues and holding those in power accountable for their actions. We must also amplify the voices of those who have been marginalized and continue fighting for justice until every person is treated equally under the law.
