Presidential Pets
For years, the White House has been home to many pets. From dogs and cats to horses and even exotic animals, these furry (or scaly) friends have always been a part of presidential families. Some of the most popular breeds include Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, and Portuguese Water Dogs.
One of the most famous presidential pets was FDR’s dog Fala. This Scottish Terrier became so popular that he had his own press secretary! Another notable pet was President Kennedy’s horse, Sardar. The horse would often be ridden by JFK around the White House lawn.
However, not all presidential pets were traditional. President Calvin Coolidge owned a number of unusual animals including a raccoon named Rebecca and two lion cubs named Tax Reduction and Budget Bureau! Even exotic birds such as parrots have made their way into the White House with Theodore Roosevelt owning an Amazon Parrot named Eli Yale.
Pets in the White House are more than just companions; they are also symbols of power and status. As such, it is important that presidents choose their pets carefully to reflect this symbolism. For example, when Barack Obama chose his Portuguese Water Dog Bo as his family’s first pet in 2009 it showed how modern and progressive he was as a president.
