Victoria Azarenka: The Resilient Tennis Star
Victoria Azarenka is a Belarusian professional tennis player who has been making waves in the sport since her teenage years. Born on July 31, 1989, she started playing tennis at the age of seven and turned pro at just 15 years old. Since then, she has become one of the most successful players in women’s tennis history.
Azarenka first rose to prominence in 2007 after winning two ITF tournaments and reaching the quarterfinals of Wimbledon as a wildcard entry. She continued to make steady progress over the next few years, winning her first WTA title in Brisbane in 2009 and reaching her first Grand Slam semifinal at the US Open later that year.
In 2012, Azarenka had her breakthrough season when she won her first major title at the Australian Open. She went on to win four more titles that year and became world No.1 for the first time in February. She also reached the final of Wimbledon that year but lost to Serena Williams.
Despite battling injuries over the next few years, Azarenka remained a top player and won two more Grand Slam titles – both at the Australian Open – in 2013 and 2016 respectively. However, it was off-court issues that forced her out of action for much of 2016-17.
In December 2016, Azarenka announced that she was pregnant with her son Leo and gave birth to him in December that year. She returned to action briefly in June 2017 but had to withdraw from Wimbledon due to an ongoing custody battle with Leo’s father.
Azarenka’s hiatus from tennis lasted almost two years as she fought for custody of her son while trying to maintain her fitness levels during limited training periods allowed by court rulings.
She eventually made a comeback at Indian Wells in March 2018 where she reached the semifinals before losing to eventual champion Naomi Osaka. Later that year, she reached the final of the Miami Open but lost to Ashleigh Barty.
In 2020, Azarenka once again proved her resilience and determination by reaching the final of the US Open where she faced off against none other than Serena Williams. Despite losing the first set 6-1, Azarenka fought back to take the next two sets and win her third Grand Slam title.
Azarenka’s comeback has been nothing short of remarkable given all that she has had to overcome both on and off-court. She is a fierce competitor with a never-say-die attitude and is known for her aggressive baseline play, especially on hard courts.
Off-court, Azarenka is also very involved in charity work through her foundation which supports underprivileged children in Belarus. She was named a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 2015 and has been actively involved in raising awareness about child protection issues.
Azarenka’s career may have had its ups and downs over the years but there is no denying that she is one of tennis’ most resilient players who continues to inspire fans around the world with her grit and determination both on and off-court.
