The Screen Actors Guild Awards took place this past weekend, and as always, there were plenty of standout moments. The 27th annual ceremony was held virtually due to the ongoing pandemic, but that didn’t stop Hollywood’s finest from showing up and showing out.
One of the most talked-about moments of the night came early on when Jason Bateman won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series for his role in “Ozark.” Many fans were surprised by this win, as it was widely expected that Josh O’Connor would take home the award for his portrayal of Prince Charles in “The Crown.” Nonetheless, Bateman gave a heartfelt acceptance speech and thanked his fellow cast members for their support.
Another major highlight of the night was Viola Davis’ win for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her performance in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Davis made history with this win, becoming the first black actress to ever receive five SAG Awards. In her acceptance speech, she paid tribute to her late co-star Chadwick Boseman and spoke about how much he meant to her both personally and professionally.
The ensemble cast awards are always highly anticipated at the SAG Awards, and this year was no exception. The cast of “The Trial of the Chicago 7” took home Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, while “Schitt’s Creek” won Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. Both casts delivered outstanding performances over the course of their respective projects and truly deserved these accolades.
In addition to recognizing individual performances and ensemble casts, the SAG Awards also highlighted diversity within Hollywood. Yuh-Jung Youn became only the second Asian woman ever to win an individual SAG Award when she took home Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for “Minari,” while Daniel Kaluuya won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for his portrayal of Fred Hampton in “Judas and the Black Messiah.” These wins were significant not only for the actors themselves but also for the Asian and black communities, respectively.
Overall, the 27th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards was a night to remember. Despite being held virtually, it still managed to capture all of the excitement and glamour that we’ve come to expect from Hollywood’s awards season. With so many talented performers recognized for their outstanding work over the past year, it’s clear that there is no shortage of talent within the industry.
