The Los Angeles Lakers – A Stephen King Style Tale of Triumph and Tragedy

Basketball fans across the world have come to know the Los Angeles Lakers as one of the most successful franchises in NBA history. With a stunning 17 championship titles under their belt, it’s no wonder that they are considered one of the most iconic teams in basketball history.

But like any good Stephen King novel, there is always more to the story than what meets the eye. The tale of triumph and tragedy surrounding this legendary franchise is filled with twists and turns that would make even Stephen King himself proud.

Let’s take a closer look at some of these moments:

The Showtime Era

In the late 1970s, Magic Johnson joined forces with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and formed an unstoppable duo that dominated on court. They won five championships together during their time playing for LA, including two back-to-back victories in 1987 and 1988.

This era was known as ‘Showtime’, where basketball was played with flair, style, and entertainment value. The team had a unique talent when it came to passing plays which made for incredible highlights on ESPN SportsCenter each week.

However, this era would come crashing down following Magic Johnson’s shocking announcement in November 1991 that he had tested positive for HIV. He retired from professional basketball immediately after revealing his diagnosis.

The Kobe Bryant Era

Kobe Bryant joined the Lakers straight out of high school back in 1996, becoming one of only a few players who were ever able to do so. His hard work ethic quickly became apparent as he worked tirelessly on his game throughout his rookie season.

Bryant went on to become one of the greatest players to ever play for LA over his illustrious twenty-year career with them which included winning five championship titles; however not everything was smooth sailing between him and fellow teammate Shaquille O’Neal resulting in tension between the two.

This era was riddled with drama and controversy as the Lakers went through various personnel changes. But despite this, they managed to dominate the NBA in the early 2000s.

The Tragedy of Kobe Bryant

In January 2020, a helicopter carrying Kobe Bryant and his teenage daughter Gianna crashed outside Los Angeles. The world mourned as one of basketball’s greatest players was gone too soon.

Bryant’s legacy on and off-court will never be forgotten, but it’s tragic that he wasn’t able to see some of the team’s recent successes which included winning their first championship title since his retirement in 2010 last year.

The Present Day Lakers

With Anthony Davis joining LeBron James in LA back in July 2019, things were looking bright for the team heading into this season. Their performances have been nothing short of impressive even during an unprecedented time for sports due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions; however not everything has gone smoothly for them.

Despite having a strong start to this season, injuries have plagued key players like LeBron James and Anthony Davis who are both out indefinitely due to injury which has led fans concerned about whether or not they can maintain their momentum without these star players on court.

While we don’t know what lies ahead for the current Lakers squad or where their story will take them next, there is no doubt that this franchise will continue its reign as one of basketball’s most successful teams – just like any good Stephen King novel where there is always another chapter waiting around the corner.
