The Olympic Games, often referred to as the world’s largest sporting event, have always been a symbol of unity and harmony among nations. However, behind the glitz and glamour of hosting such an enormous event, lies a host of controversies that are usually overlooked by the general public.
One of the most significant issues facing Olympic hosts is that of displacement. The construction of new stadiums and infrastructure often involves forcibly evicting residents from their homes or communities. This was evident in Rio de Janeiro where over 77,000 people were displaced to make way for the 2016 Summer Olympics. Similarly, in Beijing 2008, thousands were displaced from their homes to make way for new facilities.
Another issue plaguing Olympic hosts is corruption. In many cases, local officials siphon off funds intended for construction and other preparations leaving taxpayers with massive debts long after the games have ended. This was seen in Sochi when it hosted its Winter Olympics in 2014 which cost an estimated $51 billion – making it one of the most expensive events ever held.
Environmental concerns have also come to light during recent Olypmics with criticism regarding pollution levels caused by construction works and increased traffic congestion due to mass tourism influx during this period.
Finally, there has always been controversy surrounding human rights abuses faced by host countries leading up to the games themselves. For example China’s treatment towards Tibetans before Beijing’s summer games in 2008 or Russia’s anti-LGBTQ+ laws prior to Sochi’s winter games six years later.
In conclusion while hosting such an event can bring about economic benefits for a country alongside showcasing national pride on an international platform; we must not forget those who are negatively affected by these types of events nor turn a blind eye towards environmental damage or human rights abuses that can occur when preparing for such mega-events.
