Tornadoes: The Destructive Force of Nature
Tornadoes are one of the most powerful and destructive forces in nature. They are violent, rotating columns of air that can cause immense damage to everything in their path. These storms form when warm, humid air collides with cooler, drier air, creating a spinning vortex.
The United States is the country that experiences the highest number of tornadoes each year, with an average of 1,200 twisters reported annually. Tornado season typically occurs from March to August but can happen at any time during the year.
Tornadoes vary in size and intensity. The Enhanced Fujita Scale (EF-Scale) is used to rate them based on the amount of damage they cause. An EF-0 tornado has winds up to 85 mph and causes minor damage such as broken tree limbs or shingles blown off roofs. On the other end of the scale, an EF-5 tornado has winds over 200 mph and can level entire neighborhoods.
One of the deadliest outbreaks in recent history occurred on April 27th, 2011 when multiple tornadoes ripped through Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee and Virginia killing more than 300 people and causing billions in damages.
Although meteorologists use radar technology to detect these storms before they hit populated areas enabling residents enough time to find safety – there remains no way to predict exactly where a tornado will hit or how strong it will be until it’s happening right then and there.
If you live in a region prone to tornado activity; having a plan for what you’ll do if one comes your way could save lives – so make sure everyone knows where they need to be within your home or building when sirens go off or alerts come through your weather radio or phone app indicating a high probability for severe weather conditions including possible tornadic activity.
Additionally; always have an emergency kit stocked with items like water bottles/snacks, first aid supplies, flashlights/batteries, cell phone charger(s), and anything else that may be necessary in case of a possible long-term power outage or injury.
Tornadoes are an incredibly destructive force and should not be taken lightly. Understanding how they form and what to do if one strikes can help keep you safe during tornado season.
