As drivers, we’re all too familiar with the dreaded toll fees that come along with using certain highways and bridges. While they can be a nuisance for some, they serve an important purpose in funding necessary infrastructure repairs and improvements.
However, not all toll fees are created equal. In fact, there has been growing concern over the disproportionate tolls placed on low-income communities and people of color. A recent study found that 46% of households who earn less than $25,000 per year do not have access to a vehicle, making it difficult for them to avoid these costly fees.
Additionally, toll booths themselves can pose safety risks for drivers. Accidents have been known to occur when drivers attempt to quickly merge into a different lane or stop suddenly at unmanned booths.
One potential solution? The implementation of electronic tolling systems which allow for seamless payment without the need for physical cash or stopping at a booth. This could also lead to more equitable pricing structures as well as increased convenience for all drivers.
While toll fees may never be completely eliminated from our roadways, it’s important that we continue to examine their impact on our communities and explore ways to make them fairer and safer for everyone.
