In the world of baseball, there are few honors as prestigious as being named Rookie of the Year. This award recognizes the top newcomer in each league and is voted on by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA). The award has been given out annually since 1947 and has honored some of baseball’s biggest stars.
One of the most famous recipients of this award was Jackie Robinson, who won it in 1947 after breaking baseball’s color barrier. Other notable winners include Mike Trout, Derek Jeter, Ichiro Suzuki, and Aaron Judge.
Being named Rookie of the Year is a huge accomplishment for any player but especially so for those just starting their career. Many times these players have spent years working their way through minor league systems before finally getting their shot at the big leagues.
In recent years, we’ve seen a number of young players make an immediate impact in Major League Baseball. In 2019, New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso took home National League Rookie of the Year honors after hitting 53 home runs – breaking Aaron Judge’s rookie record set just two years earlier.
In addition to Alonso’s impressive performance last year, Houston Astros outfielder Yordan Alvarez also made his mark on Major League Baseball as he won American League Rookie of the Year honors while slashing .313/.412/.655 with 27 home runs in just half a season worth of games played.
The race for this year’s Rookie of the Year awards promises to be just as competitive with several outstanding candidates emerging early on in this shortened season. One such example is Kyle Lewis from Seattle Mariners who hit four homers over his first six games en route to being named AL Player Of The Week during opening week.
Another player making waves early on is Luis Robert from Chicago White Sox who has already shown off his five-tool potential with his speed and power capabilities along with solid defense out in center field too thus far during this unique season that has seen games played without fans in attendance.
Although the season may be shorter than usual, there is still plenty of baseball to be played and plenty of time for young players to make their mark. The Rookie of the Year award will undoubtedly be hotly contested once again this year with many deserving candidates vying for the honor.
Regardless of who ultimately takes home the trophy, being named Rookie of the Year is a significant achievement that recognizes not only an individual player’s talent but also their potential for a bright future in Major League Baseball.
