Travel and Adventure: Why We Need to Embrace the Unknown

There’s something about travel that captivates us. It’s not just about escaping the mundane routine of daily life or taking a break from work, but it’s also an opportunity to explore new places, meet different people, and challenge our perspectives. Yet, despite all its benefits, many of us still shy away from adventure.

As someone who has traveled extensively over the years, I’ve come to realize that there are two types of travelers: those who plan every detail of their trip down to the last minute and those who embrace spontaneity and let fate guide them. While both approaches have their merits, I believe that there’s something special about stepping into the unknown.

The fear of the unknown is a common human trait – we feel safe in familiar surroundings where we know what to expect. However, this safety net can also be a trap. When we limit ourselves to what we know or what we’re comfortable with, we miss out on opportunities for growth and self-discovery.

One of my most memorable travel experiences was when I decided to take a solo trip to Japan without any prior planning. All I had was a backpack and a rough itinerary in my head. There were moments when I felt lost and overwhelmed by the language barrier and cultural differences, but these challenges also forced me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to see things differently.

Traveling with no set plans allows you to fully immerse yourself in your surroundings; you’re free from schedules or commitments that might otherwise hold you back from exploring off-the-beaten-path destinations or meeting locals who can offer unique insights into their culture.

In today’s world where everything is connected through technology and social media platforms like Instagram encourage us to curate our lives for others’ approval, traveling unplanned offers respite from these pressures as well as an opportunity for genuine connections with people around us.

But embracing the unknown doesn’t always mean you have to go solo or travel without plans. It could also mean trying new things – like bungee jumping, skydiving, or even just tasting a local delicacy you’ve never heard of.

For instance, during my trip to New Zealand last year, I decided to do something that would take me out of my comfort zone: I booked a helicopter ride over Franz Josef glacier. As someone who’s afraid of heights and flying, this was definitely not an easy decision for me. But as we flew over the majestic ice formation and saw the world from above, I felt both exhilarated and humbled by how small we are in comparison to nature’s vastness.

These moments of vulnerability remind us that there is so much more to life than what we know or what we’re used to. They show us that our fears can be overcome and that growth comes from stepping outside our comfort zones.

Of course, embracing the unknown does come with risks – sometimes things won’t go according to plan, but these challenges often lead to unexpected discoveries and stories worth telling. The key is not letting fear hold us back from taking those first steps towards adventure.

As Lindy West writes in her book “Shrill,” “fear is boring.” It keeps us stuck in old patterns and prevents us from experiencing all the beauty and excitement that life has to offer. So why not take a chance on something new? Whether it’s traveling solo or trying a new activity on your next trip, embrace the unknown – you might just surprise yourself with what you find along the way.
