To answer these questions, we spoke with yoga teacher and practitioner Sarah Johnson about the benefits of yoga, how to get started, and what makes this practice different from other forms of exercise.

Firstly, Sarah explained that yoga is more than just a physical activity – it’s also a mental and spiritual practice. “Yoga originated in India thousands of years ago,” she said. “It was originally practiced as a means of preparing the body for meditation.”

This mindfulness aspect of yoga is one reason why many people find it helpful for reducing anxiety or depression symptoms.

“By focusing on your breath during yoga practice,” explained Sarah. “You can train yourself to slow down your breathing rate which can help calm anxious thoughts.”

1) Find an experienced teacher

“Starting out with an experienced teacher who can guide you safely through different poses will help you avoid injury and ensure you’re practicing correctly,” said Sarah.

2) Start with beginner-friendly classes

“Don’t worry about trying to jump into advanced classes right away – start with beginner-friendly classes that focus on foundational poses,” advised Sarah.

3) Be patient with yourself

“Yoga is a practice, not a perfect. Don’t get too hung up on ‘achieving’ certain poses or doing everything perfectly from the beginning.”

Nowadays, there are also many resources available online for people who want to try yoga at home. However, Sarah warned that it’s still important to be cautious when practicing alone.

“If you’re new to yoga or have any health concerns, it’s always best to start out with an experienced teacher in a studio setting,” she said. “But once you’ve learned some basics, there are plenty of great online videos and apps available.”

Overall, the benefits of yoga go far beyond just physical fitness. By incorporating mindfulness and breath work into your practice, yoga can help improve both mental and physical well-being.
