John’s tweet also encouraged people to vote for Black Entrepreneurs Day by April 20th. The event is a virtual summit designed to celebrate and support Black entrepreneurs. It features speakers such as Shaquille O’Neal, Gabrielle Union-Wade, and Jamie Foxx.
The tweet generated positive responses from many Twitter users who were inspired by Harvey’s story and excited about Black Entrepreneurs Day. However, some critics questioned whether focusing on race was necessary or helpful in promoting entrepreneurship.
This isn’t the first time that issues of race have come up in discussions about entrepreneurship. According to data from the Kauffman Foundation, which tracks entrepreneurship trends in the United States, there are significant racial disparities when it comes to starting and scaling businesses.
For example, while people of color make up almost 40% of the U.S. population, they represent only around 20% of new entrepreneurs. Additionally, businesses owned by people of color tend to be smaller and less profitable than those owned by white entrepreneurs.
Some experts argue that systemic racism plays a role in these disparities. For example, people of color may face more barriers when it comes to accessing capital or networking opportunities.
Despite these challenges, there are many successful Black entrepreneurs like Alysha Harvey who are making their mark on the business world. With events like Black Entrepreneurs Day and supportive funding initiatives like the NAACP grant, there is hope that more Black entrepreneurs will be able to break through and achieve success.
