New York Governor Kathy Hochul has been banking on new supertall office towers to finance the renovation of Penn Station, according to a tweet by Stefanos Chen, a New York Times journalist. The announcement comes as the governor pushes for an ambitious plan to overhaul one of America’s most infamous transportation hubs.
Penn Station, located in Midtown Manhattan, is notorious for its overcrowding and outdated infrastructure. It serves over 600,000 commuters daily and is a crucial link between New York City and other major cities along the East Coast. However, the station’s current state has been described by many as a “hellhole,” with long lines, limited seating areas, poor ventilation, and inadequate facilities for passengers.
Governor Hochul has made it her top priority to improve Penn Station since assuming office earlier this year. She has proposed an ambitious plan that involves constructing two new supertall office towers above the station that would generate revenue through rent payments from tenants. These funds would then be used to finance much-needed renovations throughout the station.
However, this plan may face some challenges from local residents who are concerned about the impact these skyscrapers will have on their neighborhoods’ character and skyline.
