Texas Senator Ted Cruz has taken to Twitter to assert that standing up for freedom is quintessentially American. However, he also claimed that the Biden administration’s Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is now labeling Americans who do so as extremists.
Cruz’s tweet on July 20 was in response to an interview he had with conservative radio host Ben Ferguson. During the conversation, Cruz argued that Democrats are using “critical race theory” and “cancel culture” to silence anyone who disagrees with their ideology. He went on to claim that this suppression of free speech is particularly evident in the FBI’s recent actions.
“The Biden FBI is targeting patriots,” said Cruz during his interview with Ferguson. “They’re targeting people who love America, people who stand up for the Constitution.”

As for Cruz’s assertion about the FBI labeling Americans as extremists simply for advocating certain political positions, it is true that the agency has been cracking down on certain far-right groups in recent years. In 2020, FBI Director Christopher Wray testified before Congress that racially motivated violent extremism (which includes white supremacists) was one of the top threats facing the country.
But some experts argue that Cruz’s tweet misrepresents the situation. “The FBI isn’t labeling anyone an extremist just because they disagree with Democrats,” said Mary McCord, a former Justice Department official who now directs Georgetown University’s Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection. “It’s about people who are advocating violence or engaging in criminal activity.”
McCord added that free speech protections still apply to all Americans, regardless of their political beliefs. “You have a right to say whatever you want, as long as you’re not inciting violence or breaking other laws,” she explained.
