Reddit Co-Founder Alexis Ohanian Tweets Sad Face Emoji Over Forbes' List of Richest People in Each State 2021

On June 7, Alexis Ohanian tweeted a sad face emoji and a link to an article from Forbes titled “The Richest Person In Each State 2021.” The tweet caught the attention of many on social media, leaving them wondering what could have caused such a reaction from the co-founder of Reddit.

Upon clicking the link shared by Ohanian, one can see that the article highlights who Forbes has deemed as the wealthiest person in each state for this year. While it may seem like harmless information to some, others see it as yet another example of wealth inequality in America.

Forbes’ list reveals that many of the richest individuals in each state come from industries such as technology, finance and real estate. Some notable names include Elon Musk in California with a net worth of $151 billion and Warren Buffet in Nebraska with a net worth of $102 billion.

This is not the first time that Ohanian has spoken out about issues surrounding wealth inequality. In fact, he has been vocal about his support for progressive policies and movements aimed at addressing these issues. In 2019, he stepped down from his position on Reddit’s board and urged them to fill his seat with a Black candidate.

Ohanian’s tweet comes at a time when discussions around wealth inequality are more prevalent than ever before. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted just how unequal our economic system truly is, with many low-income individuals being hit hardest while billionaires continued to increase their wealth.

One example cited by activists is Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’ massive fortune during this pandemic. Despite millions losing their jobs or facing financial hardship due to COVID-19 related shutdowns last year alone Bezos increased his personal wealth by nearly $80 billion dollars according to reports published Forbes magazine

While some argue that wealthy individuals have earned their fortunes through hard work and innovation, others believe that our current economic system allows for exploitation and perpetuates systemic inequalities. This debate continues today, with both sides presenting compelling arguments.

Regardless of one’s personal beliefs on the issue, it is clear that wealth inequality in America is a complex problem that requires thoughtful and innovative solutions. As more individuals such as Ohanian use their platforms to bring attention to these issues, we can hope for progress towards a more equitable society.
