With companies like IBM and Google making significant advancements in quantum computing technology, it’s clear that this field is poised to revolutionize the way we think about computing.
But what exactly is quantum computing? And how did we get here?
To understand quantum computing, we need to first take a step back and look at traditional computers. Traditional computers use bits – tiny switches that can be set to either 0 or 1 – as the basic unit of information storage and processing. These bits are then combined into larger units called bytes, which can represent letters, numbers, or other types of data.
Quantum computers work differently. Instead of using bits, they use qubits (short for “quantum bits”). Qubits are particles that exist in multiple states simultaneously – they can be both 0 and 1 at the same time. This property allows quantum computers to perform certain calculations much faster than traditional computers.
The idea of using particles with multiple states for computation was first proposed by physicist Richard Feynman in the early 1980s. However, it wasn’t until the mid-1990s that practical experiments were conducted on small-scale quantum systems.
One of the earliest pioneers in this field was Peter Shor, a mathematician at AT&T Bell Laboratories. In 1994 he developed an algorithm known as Shor’s algorithm; one of its uses is cracking public-key cryptography codes such as those used by banks or email providers today on a classical computer would require so many years that it would not even make sense to try it out – while running Shor’s algorithm will give you an answer within minutes or hours.
Shor’s algorithm showed that quantum computers could solve certain problems exponentially faster than traditional computers could – including breaking commonly-used encryption methods such as RSA. This discovery sparked a flurry of interest in quantum computing, and researchers around the world began working to develop practical quantum computer systems.
One of these researchers was David Deutsch of Oxford University. In 1985, he proposed the idea of a universal quantum computer – a machine that could perform any computation that is possible on a classical computer, but much faster. Another method uses trapped ions – charged atoms suspended in electromagnetic fields – which are manipulated with lasers while being held in place by very carefully controlled electric fields.
Despite these advances, however, practical quantum computers have remained elusive until recently when companies like IBM and Google have made significant strides towards developing small-scale yet useful devices based on superconductors.

In addition, many companies are now investing in educational initiatives aimed at training the next generation of quantum computing experts. IBM, for example, has launched a free online course called “Quantum Computing 101” that provides an introduction to the fundamental concepts of quantum computing.
The importance of education in this field cannot be overstated; without a strong foundation in both theory and practical application, researchers would not have been able to make the progress they have today. And with so much potential for growth and innovation within the field of quantum computing, it’s clear that there will continue to be high demand for skilled professionals who can help drive this technology forward.
