Renewable Energy: A Decade of Growth and Innovation

Renewable Energy: A Look Back

As we approach the end of the decade, it is imperative that we reflect on the advancements made in renewable energy. Renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydroelectric power have become increasingly popular all around the world as people recognize their potential to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate climate change.

The 2010s saw a surge in investment and innovation in renewable energy. In 2011, Germany announced its plan to phase out nuclear power by 2022 and increase its use of renewable energy to at least 80% by 2050. China became the largest investor in renewable energy with an investment of $102 billion in 2015 alone.

Solar power emerged as one of the most promising forms of renewable energy during this time period. In fact, according to a report from IRENA (International Renewable Energy Agency), solar PV capacity increased more than tenfold between 2010 and 2019. This growth can be attributed to declining costs and improving technology.

Wind power also experienced significant growth during this decade with offshore wind farms emerging as a key contributor towards meeting clean energy targets for countries across Europe. Additionally, advances in turbine technology have led to greater efficiency resulting in lower costs.

Hydroelectric power has been used for decades but new developments have made it even more efficient. For example, small-scale hydroelectric projects are being implemented globally which allows for local communities to generate their own electricity using water resources available nearby.

While there is still much work left to be done before we can achieve complete decarbonization, it’s clear that renewable energy has come a long way since just ten years ago. With continued innovations and investments into research & development, we’re sure that renewables will continue gaining momentum into the next decade —and beyond!
