Donald Trump Becomes Third US President to be Impeached by House of Representatives

In the history of American politics, there have been only three impeachments of a sitting president. The first was Andrew Johnson in 1868, followed by Bill Clinton in 1998 and now Donald Trump in 2019. Impeachment is a political process where the House of Representatives investigates and charges the President with high crimes and misdemeanors.

In December 2019, Donald Trump became the third US president to be impeached by the House of Representatives for his alleged abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The investigation began after a whistleblower alerted members of Congress that during a phone call on July 25th, President Trump had asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate his political rival Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden’s business dealings in Ukraine.

The Democrats claimed that President Trump withheld military aid from Ukraine as leverage to get them to investigate Joe Biden’s family. They also accused him of obstructing their investigation into these allegations by refusing to allow key witnesses from testifying before Congress or providing documents related to the case.

President Trump denied all allegations against him, saying that he did nothing wrong during his phone call with Zelensky. He called it “perfect” and an appropriate request between two world leaders discussing corruption within their countries.

The impeachment inquiry started on September 24th when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced she was launching an official impeachment inquiry against President Trump. This led to weeks-long hearings held by both parties’ committees where lawmakers heard testimony from several key witnesses who were directly involved in the events leading up to the phone call between Presidents Trump and Zelensky.

These witnesses included former US Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch; European Union Ambassador Gordon Sondland; National Security Council member Lt. Col Alexander Vindman; Fiona Hill, Russia expert at National Security Council staff; Kurt Volker, former special envoy for Ukraine negotiations among others.

The testimonies revealed a clear pattern of behavior by the Trump administration, where they used military aid as leverage to get Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden’s family. Gordon Sondland testified that the President’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani was directly involved in pressuring Ukraine to carry out these investigations.

Despite all evidence against him, President Trump remained defiant and refused to cooperate with the impeachment inquiry. His administration blocked key witnesses from testifying before Congress and refused to provide documents related to the case.

On December 18th, 2019, after weeks of hearings and debates, the House of Representatives voted on two articles of impeachment against President Trump – abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The vote passed along party lines with Democrats voting in favor of both articles while Republicans voted against them.

The next step in the process was a Senate trial where Senators acted as jurors deciding whether or not President Trump should be removed from office. However, it was widely expected that he would be acquitted due to Republicans having a majority in the Senate.

On February 5th, 2020, after weeks-long Senate trial proceedings that included testimony from key witnesses including John Bolton – former National Security Advisor – who had firsthand knowledge about what transpired during those events leading up to his removal from office; Donald John Trump became only one US president ever impeached for abusing his power but also got acquitted by a Republican-led senate without seeing any consequences for his actions.

In conclusion, Donald Trump’s impeachment is another chapter added into America’s political history books. It demonstrated how divided American politics has become over issues such as corruption and abuse of power. It showed how partisanship can play a role in influencing decisions made by lawmakers despite overwhelming evidence presented before them.
Regardless if someone believes that justice was served or not regarding this case; one thing is clear: Americans need their elected officials working together towards finding common ground rather than tearing each other apart over ideological differences which will define our future generations.
