Tom Hanks: The Voice of America
Tom Hanks is not just a Hollywood icon. He is also a voice of reason, hope, and patriotism at a time when these values seem to be in short supply. In recent years, he has emerged as one of the most vocal and passionate advocates for American democracy and civic engagement. With his signature blend of humor, wisdom, and empathy, he has become an unlikely hero for millions of Americans who are struggling to make sense of the chaos around them.
Hanks’ journey as a public figure began long before he became famous as an actor. Born in Concord, California in 1956, Hanks grew up in a working-class family with three siblings. His father was an itinerant cook who often moved the family from one town to another. Despite this instability, Hanks developed a love for reading and writing that would stay with him throughout his life.
After graduating from high school in Oakland, California, Hanks enrolled at Chabot College but dropped out after two years to pursue acting full-time. He landed his first role on “The Love Boat” in 1980 but did not achieve stardom until his breakthrough performance as Josh Baskin in “Big” (1988). Since then, he has starred in some of the most beloved movies of our time including “Forrest Gump,” “Apollo 13,” “Cast Away,” and “Saving Private Ryan.”
But what sets Hanks apart from other actors is not just his talent or success on screen; it’s also his commitment to using his platform for good causes. Over the past few years alone, he has spoken out against racism and bigotry; supported initiatives to promote education; advocated for veterans’ rights; called attention to climate change; defended press freedom; urged people to vote; and even donated plasma after recovering from COVID-19.
Perhaps most importantly though, Hanks embodies the best of America’s democratic spirit. He is a patriot who loves his country not in spite of its flaws but because of them. In an interview with The New York Times, he said: “I’m not a cynical person about democracy or the American experiment or what we are as Americans. I still believe that good prevails over bad, and that when it doesn’t, you just have to keep trying.”
As Sarah Kendzior once wrote in her book “Hiding in Plain Sight,” “Tom Hanks has become a symbol of American decency.” And indeed, he has. His down-to-earth demeanor, dry wit, and relatable persona make him one of the most likable celebrities around. But more than that, his unwavering commitment to justice and equality make him an inspiration to millions.
In this age of fake news and political polarization, Tom Hanks reminds us that there is still hope for our country. He shows us that it’s possible to be both patriotic and critical; optimistic and realistic; committed to excellence and humble at the same time. As he once said: “The United States is still one helluva great idea…and when we act like it then guess what? It will be contagious.”
