Athlete Accommodations: The Good, The Bad and The Hilarious
Athletes are known for their strength, endurance and dedication to their sport. But what about the accommodations they stay in during competitions? From luxurious hotels to unexpected surprises, athletes have seen it all.
In some cases, top athletes are treated like royalty with high-end accommodations such as penthouse suites overlooking the city skyline or private villas on secluded beaches. These athletes can enjoy amenities like personal chefs, massage therapists and even a private butler service- basically everything you could ever want in a hotel room!
However not all athletes get these luxurious accommodations; some end up staying in less than ideal conditions. For example, during the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics there were reports of unfinished hotel rooms that lacked basic necessities such as hot water or functioning toilets. It was not uncommon for Olympians to tweet pictures of their “accommodations” which resembled construction sites more than livable spaces.
But sometimes even bad situations can lead to hilarious stories. During a trip to China for an international gymnastics competition, Team USA was shocked by their hotel’s bathroom arrangements – squat toilets! This caused quite a stir with many American gymnasts unsure how they would compete without access to western-style facilities.
On another occasion at the Rio Summer Olympics in 2016, Australian swimmers had a surprise when they arrived at their lodgings- workers were still putting on finishing touches! Despite incomplete bathrooms and no running water in some rooms (which made using those aforementioned squat toilets even more difficult), the Aussies found humor in the situation by posting photos online of themselves making do with makeshift toilet paper holders made from empty cardboard rolls.
But it’s not just international competitions where unexpected lodging conditions arise –even domestic events can lead to surprises. At one US track meet held at a college campus several years ago, competitors were housed overnight inside dormitories that normally only host students. The athletes were surprised to find themselves sharing rooms with strangers and sleeping on twin-sized beds meant for college students, not world-class athletes.
But sometimes even when accommodations are top-notch, things can go awry. During the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, some skiers and snowboarders found their hotel rooms infested with bedbugs. Although steps were taken to eradicate the pests, many of these athletes had already been bitten before they realized what was happening.
On a more positive note, there have been occasions where athletes’ lodging has led to unexpected bonding experiences between competitors. At one international track meet held in Europe several years ago, two rival relay teams from different countries ended up being housed together overnight. Despite initial tension between the teams due to language barriers and cultural differences, by morning both groups had bonded over a shared love of chocolate croissants provided by the hotel’s breakfast buffet.
In other cases, accommodations have played an important role in helping athletes perform at their best – or at least recover after competition. For example during the 2012 London Olympics many swimmers used ice baths located inside their hotels as part of their post-race recovery routine – something that may not have been possible if they stayed elsewhere.
And let’s not forget about those quirky accommodations that add some extra charm to an event! For instance during the annual “Red Bull Flugtag” competition where teams build human-powered flying machines and launch them off a pier into water below- participants must camp out overnight near their creation which usually involves tents scattered around the beachfront or parking lots next to where they will be launching from!
In conclusion, athlete accommodations can range from luxurious penthouses overlooking cityscapes to unfinished construction sites lacking basic amenities- but no matter what conditions they face it’s always interesting (and often hilarious) hearing about how these high-performing individuals make do with whatever is thrown at them!
