But perhaps one of the most absurd government policies in recent memory was Alabama State Representative Ed Henry’s proposal to drug test welfare recipients back in 2016. Under his proposal, anyone receiving public assistance would be required to pass a drug test before receiving any benefits.
While this idea might sound reasonable at first glance (after all, why should taxpayers be funding drug habits?), it quickly became clear that this policy was not only impractical but also unconstitutional. In fact, a similar law in Florida was struck down by the courts for violating the Fourth Amendment’s protection against unreasonable searches and seizures.
