In today’s society, it is hard to escape screens. Whether it be on our phones, computers, tablets, or televisions, we are constantly bombarded with information and entertainment through screens. While technological advancements have made many aspects of life easier and more convenient than ever before, excessive screen time can have negative effects on our physical and mental health.

Research has shown that too much screen time can lead to a sedentary lifestyle which in turn increases the risk of obesity and other health problems such as heart disease and diabetes. Sitting for long periods of time while staring at a screen also leads to poor posture which can cause back pain and neck strain.

Moreover, excessive screen time affects sleep patterns by disrupting circadian rhythms leading individuals to experience insomnia or restless sleep leading them feeling tired during the day. The blue light emitted from screens suppresses melatonin production thus making it harder for individuals to fall asleep at night.

Excessive screen-time may also increase anxiety levels among adults as well as children. Social media platforms are designed in a way that encourages comparisons between people’s lives which may lead some users feeling inadequate about their own lives. It has been observed that those who spend more than two hours per day on social media report very high rates of poor mental health including symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Parenting experts suggest limiting children’s access to digital devices since children exposed excessively to electronic gadgets often struggle with focus issues when doing non-digital activities such as reading books or playing outside; they become easily distracted due to an increased need for stimulation provided by the devices’ bright colors and sounds.

It is important for everyone – regardless of age –  to limit their exposure to screens every day by taking breaks from technology throughout the day- whether it be going for a walk without your phone or taking up a hobby that doesn’t involve technology like gardening or painting.

In conclusion, while advances in technology continue improving our daily lives immensely; it’s important to be aware of the effects excessive screen time can have on our physical and mental health. It is crucial that we all take steps to limit our exposure to screens and encourage others around us to do the same.
