Panel Discussion on Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program
Panelists:
– John Smith, Director of Student Financial Services at XYZ University
– Jane Doe, President of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators
– Tom Brown, former student loan borrower and current public service employee
Moderator: Good afternoon everyone. Today we are discussing the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. John, can you explain what this program is and who it benefits?
John: Absolutely. PSLF is a federal program that forgives the remaining balance on eligible Direct Loans after borrowers have made 120 qualifying monthly payments while working full-time for certain public service employers. This includes government organizations at any level (federal, state or local), 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations and some other types of not-for-profit organizations.
Moderator: Jane, what are some common misconceptions about PSLF?
Jane: One misconception is that all federal loans qualify for forgiveness under PSLF. Only Direct Loans qualify for forgiveness. Another misconception is that borrowers must make consecutive payments to be eligible for forgiveness – this isn’t true as long as they continue to work in public service during the time between qualifying payments.
Moderator: Tom, can you share your experience with using PSLF?
Tom: Sure. I’m currently employed by a non-profit organization and have been making qualifying payments towards my Direct Loans since I graduated from college in 2012. Last year was my 120th payment and I applied for forgiveness through PSLF which was approved earlier this year – it’s definitely helped me manage my debt while working in public service.
Moderator: That’s great to hear! Are there any other tips or advice you would give to others considering PSLF?
Tom: Yes, one piece of advice would be to regularly check-in on eligibility requirements because they can change over time – such as changes to qualifying employers or potential changes to the program altogether. It’s also important to keep track of your payments and employment documentation as it can be time-consuming to compile everything when it comes time to apply for forgiveness.
Moderator: Thank you all for sharing your expertise and experiences with PSLF – it’s a valuable program that could help many public service employees manage their student loan debt.
