Summer is here, and with it comes the threat of dehydration. As temperatures rise, so does our need for water. But let’s be honest, drinking enough water can be a real chore. So why not approach this serious topic with a bit of humor? Here are some signs that you might be dehydrated:
1. Your skin looks like the Sahara Desert: If your skin feels dry and papery to the touch, it’s time to start chugging some H2O.
2. You’re constantly craving salty snacks: When we’re dehydrated, our body craves salt because it has lost important minerals like sodium and potassium.
3. You’re feeling tired all the time: Dehydration can cause fatigue because when we don’t have enough fluids in our body, our blood pressure drops which results in less oxygen being delivered to our organs.
4. Your lips are chapped: This is one of the most obvious signs of dehydration since your lips have no oil glands to keep them moisturized.
5. You feel dizzy or lightheaded: When you’re dehydrated, your blood volume decreases making it harder for your heart to pump blood throughout your body.
Now that we’ve identified some tell-tale signs of dehydration let’s talk prevention! The best way to stay hydrated is by drinking plenty of water throughout the day (duh). It’s recommended that men drink about 15 cups (3 liters) per day while women should aim for around 11 cups (2.2 liters).
But if you find plain water boring try adding slices of lemon or cucumber to spice things up. Or better yet make yourself an infused water cocktail – mix sliced strawberries and mint leaves into sparkling mineral water for a refreshing beverage!
So there you have it folks – remember these symptoms next time you start feeling parched!
