Kal Penn: The Actor Turned White House Staffer
Kalpen Suresh Modi, popularly known as Kal Penn, is an Indian-American actor, comedian, and former White House staffer. He was born on April 23, 1977, in Montclair, New Jersey.
Penn’s parents were immigrants from Gujarat, India. His mother worked as a fragrance evaluator for a perfume company while his father was an engineer. Growing up in New Jersey with his two younger siblings and attending public school helped shape the person he would become.
After graduating from Freehold Township High School in 1995, Penn went on to study at the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) where he pursued majors in sociology and film studies. While still in college, he landed his first significant role as Taj Mahal Badalandabad in the National Lampoon comedy movie “Van Wilder” (2002).
His breakthrough role came when he played Kumar Patel alongside John Cho’s character Harold Lee in the stoner comedy “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle” (2004). The movie became a cult classic and spawned two sequels: “Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay” (2008) and “A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas” (2011).
Penn later appeared in several other films such as “The Namesake” (2006), “Superman Returns” (2006), and “The Girl In The Photographs”(2015). He also had a recurring role on TV series like Fox’s “House”(2007-2011)and CBS’ “How I Met Your Mother”(2012-2013).
In addition to acting work, Penn has also used his platform to advocate for social justice causes. He volunteered for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign during both of his successful runs for office.
In 2009 after President Obama won the election; Kal Penn was offered a position in the White House Office of Public Engagement. His job was to be the liaison between the Obama administration and Asian-American and Pacific Islander communities.
Penn took a two-year hiatus from acting to work for the government, but he returned to Hollywood after leaving his post as Associate Director of Public Engagement in 2011.
In 2014, Penn starred in “The Sisterhood of Night,” an indie drama film directed by Caryn Waechter. He also had a recurring role on CBS’ “Battle Creek” (2015) before being cast as Seth Wright, the press secretary on ABC’s political thriller series “Designated Survivor” (2016-2018).
Penn’s most recent TV project was the NBC comedy series “Sunnyside”(2019). Unfortunately, it was canceled after only one season due to low ratings.
Apart from his acting career and political involvement, Penn is also known for his philanthropic efforts. In 2007 he started The Kalpen Modi Foundation with the aim of making education more accessible for underprivileged children across America. The foundation provides scholarships and mentorship programs that help students achieve their goals regardless of their socio-economic backgrounds.
In conclusion, Kal Penn is an accomplished actor and former White House staffer who has managed to create a balance between his passion for entertainment and advocacy work. He continues to inspire many through his philanthropy while still entertaining audiences with his performances on screen.
