Politics has always been an integral part of our society. It is the means through which we govern ourselves and make decisions that shape our lives, communities, and nations. However, in recent times, politics has become increasingly polarized, divisive, and often driven by personal interests rather than the common good.
As someone who has experienced the trials and tribulations of living in a deeply divided society due to my race and gender alone – I can’t help but think back on Maya Angelou’s words: “We are more alike than unalike.” These words hold true when it comes to politics as well. Despite our differences in opinion or ideology, we share a common desire for progress, peace, and prosperity.
Unfortunately, this shared desire is often overshadowed by political leaders who prioritize their own agendas over those of their constituents’. The result is a system that fails to serve its people adequately. As citizens of democratic societies around the world – it’s important that we recognize the role we play in shaping our political landscape.
One way to do this is by becoming informed about policies and issues affecting us directly. We must not rely solely on sensational headlines or partisan media outlets for information; instead – seek out diverse perspectives from reputable sources that provide objective analysis without bias.
It’s also crucial to engage with elected officials at all levels of government through town halls meetings or writing letters expressing your views on specific issues. This creates accountability for public servants who should be working towards bettering their constituents’ lives rather than furthering their own interests.
Maya Angelou once said: “Courage is the most important of all virtues because without courage you can’t practice any other virtue consistently.” Courageous action needs to be taken towards electoral reform so that every vote counts equally- regardless if you live in rural areas or urban cities across various states within countries like America where some votes are weighted unfairly against certain demographics based on location alone!
Moreover – there needs to be greater transparency in the political process, including campaign financing and lobbying. The influence of special interest groups must not outweigh the voices of everyday citizens.
Political polarization has also led to an increase in hate speech and intolerance towards those who hold opposing views. It is critical that we learn to engage in civil discourse with people we disagree with without resorting to demeaning or violent behavior. We need to recognize that diversity of thought is essential for democracy – even if it makes us uncomfortable.
Maya Angelou once said: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” This statement rings true when it comes to politics as well. Politicians must empathize with their constituents’ struggles and work towards creating a society that fosters equality, inclusion, and justice for all.
In conclusion, politics can be daunting and overwhelming- especially given its current state globally -but we have a responsibility as citizens of democratic societies around the world to remain engaged and vigilant. By working together towards common goals rather than being divided by our differences -we can create a better future for ourselves, our communities and nations at large!

People on the extremes of both sides have lost respect for each other’s opinions. Respect has been replaced by contempt. Once that happens, civility disappears. Respect is hard to get back. We have a majority in the middle, but our rules give to much power to the extremes. Keep looking for a solution
