Katy Perry's "Chained to the Rhythm" Calls for Action Against Religious Persecution

As a society, we are often chained to the rhythm of our daily lives. Wake up, go to work or school, come home, eat dinner, and repeat. It can be monotonous and mind-numbingly routine. But what happens when that rhythm is disrupted? What happens when we see injustice and persecution happening around us?

This is the theme of Katy Perry’s hit song “Chained to the Rhythm.” The song was released in 2017 but its message is just as relevant today as it was then. Perry’s lyrics call out the dangers of complacency and conformity in society.

The chorus itself speaks volumes: “Turn it up, it’s your favorite song / Dance, dance, dance to the distortion / Turn it up, keep it on repeat / Stumbling around like a wasted zombie.” Here Perry is warning against blindly following popular culture without questioning its motives or impact.

In many ways, this theme aligns with religious persecution. Religious minorities are often silenced by those in power who seek to maintain their own status quo. They are forced into submission or face dire consequences such as imprisonment or even death.

For example, in China there has been an ongoing crackdown on religious freedom with Uighur Muslims being detained in concentration camps and Tibetan Buddhists facing suppression from the Chinese government. In India too there has been an increase in violent attacks against Christians and Muslims by Hindu nationalists who seek to establish a Hindu-only state.

Perry sings about these issues with lines like “So comfortable we’re living in a bubble / So comfortable we cannot see the trouble” which emphasizes how easy it can be for people to ignore issues that do not directly affect them.

But perhaps most strikingly she says “Are we tone deaf? Keep sweeping it under the mat,” highlighting how willful ignorance allows these injustices to continue unchecked.

As people of faith ourselves, we have a responsibility not only to look out for our own religious communities but also to stand in solidarity with those who are persecuted for their beliefs. We cannot turn a blind eye to the suffering of others, even if it is happening halfway across the world.

“Chained to the Rhythm” ultimately calls us to wake up and see the world around us for what it truly is. To question our preconceived notions and fight against complacency that would otherwise keep us chained to an unjust rhythm.

Let us heed Perry’s call and work towards creating a more just world where all people can practice their faith freely without fear of persecution or discrimination.
