Indiana State University: A Basketball Team With a Rich History
When one thinks of Indiana, basketball quickly comes to mind. The state is home to some of the most passionate and skilled basketball players in the country. And at the center of it all lies Indiana State University.
The ISU Sycamores have been playing basketball since 1896, with a rich history that includes two Final Four appearances in 1979 and 2021. Their success on the court has earned them a dedicated fanbase, and their contributions to college basketball cannot be overlooked.
The team’s rise to national prominence began in the late ’70s when Larry Bird joined the team as a junior transfer from Northwood Junior College in Michigan. During his time at ISU, Bird led the Sycamores to their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance and helped them reach the championship game against Magic Johnson’s Michigan State Spartans. Though they lost that game, Bird’s performance was legendary – he scored 35 points and grabbed 16 rebounds.
In recent years, ISU has continued its tradition of excellence on the court under head coach Greg Lansing. In 2021, they made another deep run into March Madness by beating highly ranked teams like Loyola Chicago before falling short against eventual champion Baylor.
But what makes ISU truly special is its commitment to community engagement through sports. Every year, they host “Hoops for Hope,” an event that raises money for local cancer research organizations while also honoring those who have battled or are currently battling cancer.
ISU may not have as many banners hanging from its rafters as some other schools do but make no mistake – this program is one of college basketball’s hidden gems. With a storied past and bright future ahead, there’s no telling how high these Sycamores can soar on the hardwood.
