In the midst of all the excitement surrounding presidential elections, it’s easy to forget about other important races that will be taking place on Election Day. One such race is for local school board positions.
While not as glamorous or high-profile as a presidential election, the outcome of school board races can have a significant impact on our communities and children. School boards are responsible for setting policies and making decisions that affect everything from classroom curriculum to school budgets.
Unfortunately, many people overlook these races, either because they don’t realize their importance or because they simply don’t know much about the candidates running for these positions. This lack of attention can lead to poor outcomes, with unqualified or unsuitable candidates being elected to serve on our school boards.
One reason why school board races often go unnoticed is that they typically receive little coverage in the media. Unlike presidential campaigns which dominate news cycles for months leading up to Election Day, local campaigns are lucky to get a mention here and there in a newspaper article or two.
Another factor contributing to this problem is voter apathy. Many people may feel disconnected from their local schools since they no longer have children attending them, so they do not see how important it is who sits on those boards.
To combat this issue, we should make an effort to educate ourselves about the candidates running for our local school boards. Attend candidate forums if possible; read up on their backgrounds and platforms; reach out directly with questions you have regarding issues affecting your community’s education system.
We need qualified individuals serving on our school boards who understand what it takes to provide quality education while managing resources wisely. Let us take responsibility by doing some research before casting our vote in November – every vote matters!
