Citizens United v. FEC: The Landmark Supreme Court Ruling That Changed American Politics Forever

In 2010, the Supreme Court of the United States made a controversial decision that would fundamentally alter the landscape of American politics. In a 5-4 ruling, the court held that corporations and unions have the same free speech rights as individuals under the First Amendment of the Constitution.

The case, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission (FEC), centered around a conservative nonprofit organization called Citizens United that produced a critical film about Hillary Clinton during her presidential campaign in 2008. The FEC ruled that this violated campaign finance laws, which prohibit corporations and unions from spending money on political ads within 30 days of an election.

Citizens United argued that this violated its right to free speech and took its case all the way to the Supreme Court. In its ruling, the court found that limiting corporate and union spending on political campaigns was unconstitutional because it infringed on their right to express their opinions during elections.

This decision opened up a floodgate of unlimited corporate and union spending in politics, leading to concerns about corruption and undue influence over elected officials. It also paved the way for super PACs (political action committees) which can raise unlimited funds from donors – including corporations and unions – to support political candidates or issues.

Critics argue that this decision has led to increased polarization in politics as wealthy special interests now have more power than ever before to sway elections in their favor. Supporters maintain that it is simply an extension of free speech rights for all Americans regardless of whether they are individuals or organizations.

Regardless of where one falls on this issue, there is no denying that Citizens United v. FEC was a landmark ruling with far-reaching implications for American democracy as we know it today.
