The Future of Theme Parks: Immersive Experiences, Personalization, and Sustainability

Interview with Theme Park Experts: The Future of the Industry

Theme parks have been a popular form of entertainment for decades, but what does the future hold for the industry? To answer this question, we spoke with two experts in the field: Dr. Stacy Funderburk, an associate professor at the Rosen College of Hospitality Management at the University of Central Florida, and Bob Rogers, founder and chairman of BRC Imagination Arts.

Q: What trends do you see shaping the future of theme parks?

Dr. Funderburk: One trend is immersive experiences. Guests want to feel like they are part of a story rather than just observing it. Another trend is technology – attractions that incorporate virtual reality or augmented reality can enhance guest experiences.

Bob Rogers: I agree with Dr. Funderburk about immersive experiences and tech integration. Another trend is personalization – guests want their experience to be unique and tailored to them.

Q: How are theme parks adapting to changing consumer preferences?

Dr. Funderburk: Many theme parks are incorporating more thrill rides and adding IP-based attractions (intellectual property such as movie or TV show tie-ins). They are also creating more food options to cater to dietary restrictions and preferences.

Bob Rogers: Theme parks are also looking at ways to reduce wait times through virtual queuing systems or mobile apps that allow guests to reserve ride times.

Q: With concerns about climate change increasing, how do you see sustainability impacting theme park design?

Dr. Funderburk: Sustainable practices will become increasingly important in all aspects of hospitality management including theme parks. We may see more renewable energy sources used in park operations and attractions designed with sustainability in mind.

Bob Rogers: Sustainability is already playing a role in our design process at BRC Imagination Arts – we look at ways to incorporate sustainable materials and technologies into our projects whenever possible.

Overall, both experts agree that while there will always be a place for traditional theme park attractions, the industry is evolving to meet changing consumer preferences and concerns. Immersive experiences, personalization, and sustainability will shape the future of theme parks.
