Former Tennessee Democratic lawmaker reinstated after expulsion for supporting gun control protesters

Justin Pearson, a former Democratic member of the Tennessee House, has been reinstated to his position after being expelled for supporting gun control protesters. The Memphis commission voted on Wednesday to allow Pearson to return to the Legislature. He was one of two Democrats expelled by the Republican-led House in February 2021.

Pearson’s expulsion occurred after he supported a group of activists who were advocating for stricter gun control laws. The activists had disrupted proceedings in the House chamber, and Pearson was accused of helping them gain access to restricted areas.

The decision to expel Pearson was controversial, with many Democrats and gun control advocates criticizing it as an attack on free speech and political expression. Some Republicans defended the move, citing rules that prohibit disruptions during legislative sessions.

Pearson appealed his expulsion to the Shelby County Commission, which oversees government operations in Memphis. After a hearing on Wednesday, the commission voted 9-4 in favor of reinstating him.

In a statement following the decision, Pearson expressed gratitude for those who had supported him throughout his ordeal. “I look forward to returning to Nashville and continuing my work representing my constituents,” he said.

The issue of gun control has long been contentious in Tennessee politics. While some lawmakers have advocated for stricter regulations on firearms sales and ownership, others have taken a more permissive stance.

In recent years, Tennessee has passed several laws aimed at expanding access to guns and reducing restrictions on their use. These include measures allowing permitless carry and prohibiting local governments from enacting their own gun control regulations.

Despite these efforts by pro-gun groups and lawmakers, there remains significant public support for stronger firearm regulations in Tennessee. A recent poll conducted by Vanderbilt University found that over half of Tennesseans support background checks for all gun purchases.

Pearson’s reinstatement is likely to be seen as a victory by those who believe that political dissent should not be punished through expulsion or other means. It remains unclear what impact his return will have on the ongoing debate over gun control and other issues in Tennessee politics.
