The Yazidi genocide by ISIS militants is one of the most horrific incidents in modern history. The Yazidi people are a Kurdish-speaking religious minority found mainly in northern Iraq, Syria, and Turkey. They have faced centuries of persecution and discrimination because they follow an ancient religion that combines elements of Zoroastrianism, Christianity, and Islam.
The ISIS militants began their brutal assault on the Yazidis in August 2014 when they attacked Sinjar, a town located in northwestern Iraq that was home to about 400,000 Yazidis. The militants killed thousands of men and boys who refused to convert to Islam or were deemed too old to be useful as slaves. Women and girls were kidnapped and sold into sexual slavery or forced marriages with ISIS fighters.
The United Nations has called the attack on the Yazidis a genocide under international law, as it involved acts committed with intent to destroy them as a group. In addition to killing thousands of people outright, ISIS also subjected Yazidis to torture, rape, enslavement, forced displacement from their homes, and other forms of violence designed to erase their culture and identity.
Despite numerous reports documenting these atrocities by human rights organizations like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch – many countries around the world did not intervene immediately due to political reasons or lack of awareness about what was happening.
Since then activists have brought attention through social media campaigns such as #SaveYazidiWomen for years – some countries have agreed to take in refugees fleeing persecution while others remain silent on this issue which must be addressed more extensively since there are still over 3k women missing till date.
One reason why this genocide received relatively little attention compared with other conflicts is that it took place against a backdrop of multiple wars raging across Iraq & Syria at that time. Another factor was that mainstream media outlets often failed or neglected reporting on events outside western regions unless there was strong public interest pushing them otherwise – social media played a huge role in raising awareness and keeping the issue alive.
The Yazidis are still struggling to rebuild their lives after the genocide. Many of them remain displaced, living in refugee camps or temporary shelters with limited access to basic services like healthcare and education. The women who were kidnapped by ISIS continue to suffer physical and psychological trauma, often facing ostracism from their families or communities upon returning home due to stigma associated with sexual violence.
In order for there to be any hope of justice for the Yazidi people, it is essential that those responsible for these atrocities be brought before international courts. Some high-ranking ISIS militants have already been captured and prosecuted under war crimes laws, but many lower-level perpetrators remain at large – this must change if we are ever going to witness some form of justice being served.
Furthermore pressure needs to be put on countries where these individuals reside or have taken refuge as well as governments that may have turned a blind eye towards such actions through diplomatic channels & trade agreements since they maintain leverage over other nations in regards to holding perpetrators accountable through extradition measures etc.
While the world has largely moved on from the Yazidi genocide by ISIS militants – this does not mean that their suffering should be forgotten. It is up to all of us whether we choose silence or action when it comes down human rights violations especially ones that involve ethnic cleansing – only then can we ensure history will not repeat itself nor allow impunity towards such heinous acts again.
It’s important for people around the globe not just those directly affected become more knowledgeable about what happened during those days so that they may take appropriate steps necessary either through financial support, petitions advocating policy changes etc., otherwise without public outcry & adequate resources dedicated towards addressing issues related specifically targeted religious persecution incidents like this one will continue happening unabated – leaving countless innocent souls victimized in its wake.
