Crackers have been a part of Hindu festivals and celebrations for centuries. They are used to add an element of excitement and joy to the festivities. However, in recent times, there has been a growing concern over the environmental impact of bursting crackers.
The production and use of crackers have several harmful effects on the environment. The manufacturing process releases toxic fumes that pollute the air and water bodies nearby. These toxins can cause respiratory problems, skin irritation, headaches and nausea among factory workers as well as those living close by.
When crackers are burst during festivals like Diwali or New Year’s Eve, they further contribute to air pollution. The smoke from burning crackers contains harmful chemicals like sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide which pose serious health risks to humans and animals alike. It also contributes significantly to global warming.
Apart from the environmental concerns associated with crackers, there is also a social aspect to consider. Every year hundreds of children suffer injuries due to accidents while handling firecrackers during celebrations. Many pets are traumatized by the loud noise caused by fireworks causing them immense stress.
Despite these issues raised against them, many people continue using fireworks as they believe it is an essential part of their culture and tradition. However, it is important that we take into account both our traditions as well as our responsibility towards preserving nature before making such choices.
In this context comes the need for sustainable alternatives to traditional crackers like sparklers or phooljhadis (flower pots). Though not entirely zero-waste options they do not produce any noise or toxic fumes instead emitting only bright colours or sparkles thus lessening their negative impact on nature.
Another alternative could be donating money instead of spending it on buying firecrackers which would encourage a more socially responsible way of celebrating festivals helping someone in need rather than damaging surroundings with harmful substances.
In conclusion, while we celebrate our cultural heritage through various customs involving firecrackers; it is important to remember the environmental and social impact of such actions. It’s time for us to embrace sustainable alternatives that not only preserve our traditions but also create a safer environment for all living beings. We must aim at making this celebration more socially responsible and eco-friendly so that future generations can enjoy them too without causing harm to the planet.
