Her works are characterized by their unique blend of surrealism, folk art, and political commentary. However, her fame extends far beyond the realm of art as she was also known for her tumultuous personal life.

Born in Coyoacán, Mexico City in 1907, Frida Kahlo suffered from polio at a young age which left her with a limp. At 18 years old, she was involved in a bus accident that left her with severe injuries including multiple fractures to her spine and pelvis. Kahlo’s style is often described as surrealist but it also incorporates elements of traditional Mexican folk art. Her paintings feature bright colors and bold patterns inspired by indigenous textiles and pottery. She frequently included plants and animals native to Mexico such as monkeys or cacti.

One recurring theme throughout Kahlo’s work is self-portraiture. As a woman who had faced numerous challenges both physically and emotionally over the course of her life, she used self-portraits to explore themes like identity, pain, love, death, gender roles etc.. Through these self-portraits she created an intimate portrayal not only herself but also about how women navigate through society.

In addition to being an accomplished artist,Kahlo was also known for leading a colorful personal life marked by various affairs with both men and women including Diego Rivera whom she married twice.Their relationship was famously tumultuous due to Rivera’s infidelity.Kahlo even went on to have an affair with Trotsky after he moved into their home while seeking asylum during his exile from Russia.
