As the world mourns the loss of beloved author Toni Morrison, it’s important to reflect on her incredible impact on literature and book sales. Morrison’s works, including “Beloved” and “Song of Solomon,” soared in popularity following her Nobel Prize win in 1993.
But what about other celebrity deaths and their impact on book sales? It turns out that a death can often lead to a surge in book purchases as fans seek to honor their favorite authors’ legacies.
One recent example is the passing of Stephen Hawking in March 2018. The renowned physicist’s books saw an immediate spike in sales after his death, with “A Brief History of Time” becoming Amazon UK’s best-selling book within hours. According to Nielsen BookScan, his other titles also experienced significant increases in sales during that time period.
The same phenomenon occurred after Maya Angelou passed away in May 2014. Her memoir, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” shot up to number one on Amazon’s best-seller list within hours of her death being announced. Similarly, Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s books saw a boost after he died in April 2014.
This trend isn’t limited to literary figures either – musicians also experience posthumous success when it comes to book sales. Following Prince’s untimely death in April 2016, his autobiography “The Beautiful Ones” was quickly snapped up by fans eager for insight into the artist’s life and career.
Of course, this isn’t always the case – sometimes a celebrity’s work may not receive much attention after they pass away. But more often than not, readers are moved by an author or musician’s legacy and want to keep their memory alive through purchasing their art.
It’s worth noting that this increase in book sales doesn’t necessarily benefit just publishers or retailers; oftentimes proceeds from these posthumous purchases go towards charities or trusts set up in the deceased celebrity’s name. For instance, the Prince estate donated a portion of book sales to support music education in public schools.
But why do we feel compelled to buy these books after someone has died? Part of it may be a desire to honor and remember the person who created such meaningful art. In some cases, it may also be motivated by a fear that their work will be lost or forgotten if not actively sought out.
There’s also an element of nostalgia involved – reading a favorite author’s work can bring back memories of when you first discovered them, and can serve as a way to revisit those feelings and experiences.
It’s important not to overlook the role social media plays in this phenomenon as well. Platforms like Twitter and Instagram allow fans from all over the world to share their love for an artist or author they’ve lost with others who feel the same way. This sense of community can create even more interest in their body of work.
While it’s bittersweet that it often takes someone passing away for us to recognize just how much they meant to us, there is something special about being able to keep their spirit alive through their art. As Morrison once said: “We die. That may be the meaning of life. But we do language. That may be the measure of our lives.”
As we continue mourning her loss alongside other beloved authors and artists who have passed away before her, let us take solace in knowing that through buying and sharing their works, we can ensure that they’ll always live on in our hearts – and on our bookshelves.
