Unlocking the Past: The Evolution of Door Knobs

The Evolution of Door Knobs

We take door knobs for granted, but have you ever thought about their history and how they’ve evolved over time? From simple latches to intricate designs, let’s explore the evolution of door knobs.

The earliest doors were made from animal hides or woven mats. They were held in place by wooden pegs or leather straps that acted as a latch. These primitive doors didn’t require a handle or knob because they could be pushed aside easily.

As civilizations developed and began building more permanent structures, doors became larger and heavier. People needed a way to securely close these doors so they started using locks. The first known lock was invented by the ancient Egyptians around 4,000 years ago. It was made out of wood and had pins that would only allow the correct key to turn them.

However, it wasn’t until the Middle Ages that door handles started being used regularly in Europe. Early handles were made out of iron and consisted of a simple loop or ring attached to the door with screws or nails.

Door knobs as we know them today didn’t come into existence until much later during the 18th century in America when metals like brass became more readily available. Initially, these early knobs were plain round shapes without any decorative patterns.

It wasn’t until the Victorian era (1837-1901) that ornate designs started appearing on door knobs along with improved locking mechanisms which resulted in even more elaborate designs being produced. In fact, some Victorians took great pride in displaying their wealth through their home décor including their fancy doorknobs.

In recent times there has been an emphasis on safety regarding doorknobs especially fire safety regulations requiring keyless egress options from inside bedrooms for example allowing residents easier escape routes if required.

Today’s modern doorknobs come in many different styles and finishes including bronze, nickel plated steel etc., with decorative features such as etchings or patterns. They also come in many shapes and sizes to fit your personal taste and the design of your home.

Innovation is always ongoing in door knob technology with a variety of smart knobs being developed that allow you to control access through use of mobile apps, voice assistants etc. And some are even designed with keyless entry options where you can unlock the door using a code or biometric identification such as fingerprint scanning.

From simple latches made out of animal hides to advanced smart knobs, it’s clear how far we’ve come in terms of door knob development. It’s fascinating to see how an everyday item like a doorknob has evolved over time and how much innovation continues to take place around this essential household object.
